Deep Dive: Amarbayasgalant Monastery

@amarbayasgalant_khiid Monastery remains an active community where ceremonies are announced by the sounding of the conch shell trumpet (dung dkar) by the young resident monks.

This historic site continues to be a major pilgrimage center for Mongolians, with one significant event being the ‘Gongoriin Bombani Hural.’ This festival is a revival of an older tradition and named after the ‘Gongor’ deity, one of the ten protector deities and defenders of Buddhism. Built between 1726-1736, Amarbayasgalant honors the memory of Zanabazar, the first spiritual and political leader of Mongolia. After his death, his remains were brought to be buried in this monastery.

The monastery is renowned for its complex wooden construction, colorful ornaments, and intimate connection with nature. Situated in Selenge Aimag, it is located in a picturesque cul-de-sac of a long, deep valley, with Mount Buren-Khaan as its stunning backdrop and well-watered by the Iver River, which has long provided an essential water source for herders and their livestock.

For those wanting to visit, the monastery is located 35km from the nearest asphalt road and 60km from the nearest town. During adverse weather, the dirt road connecting the monastery to the asphalt road turns into a mud track, that becomes a fight between the driver and the road. This remoteness is one reason Amarbayasgalant is used as a training school for young novice monks—they have fewer distractions.

Welcome to Danshig Naadam!

Experience the vibrant colours and spectacle of Danshig Naadam, a modern festival rooted in ancient traditions. While it features the Three Manly Sports of Mongolia’s Naadam, it is also a Buddhist religious festival organised in cooperation with Mongolia’s principal monastery, Gandan.

This festival celebrates the history and practice of Buddhism in Mongolia, including the life and teachings of Zanabazar, the first Buddhist leader of Mongolia. First held in 1639 to commemorate Zanabazar’s enthronement, Danshig Naadam plays a crucial role in preserving Mongolia’s rich culture and heritage.

Everyone looks to have their own unique experience in Mongolia and seeks 'authenticity'. Well, Danshig has it in spades. Despite the traffic to and from the festival site being a nightmare, it's worth it for the community engagement, cultural preservation, deeper understanding of Mongolia's heritage, and enriching Buddhist rituals. Don’t dismiss it as just a tourist event. Yes, other tourists will be there, but it’s a true Mongolian celebration and well worth attending.

The Yak Festival is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of heritage, the strength and resilience of rural communities in Mongolia, and the deep connection between Mongolian herders and their livestock. It also honours the traditions and cultural practices that have shaped their way of life for centuries

If you decide to experience the Yak Festival (held annually on July 23 in Bat Ulziit sum near Ulaan Tsutgalan (Orkhon Waterfall) in the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site), remember to not get caught up in notions of authenticity. Yes, there will be other Westerners, but the festival features significant local involvement. The event draws many local Mongolian spectators who are always more enthusiastic than the visitors.

Operating on 'nomad' time, events might not always start on schedule. Instead of getting impatient, remove your watch and enjoy mixing with herders from the region and small-town locals.

Expect to see yak racing, yak polo, roping and rodeo, and even a yak beauty pageant (though the criteria for winning remain a delightful mystery). And, like all good Mongolian celebrations, there will also be traditional Mongolian dancing and wrestling.

Sacred Dalai Ej - Mother Sea

Khovsgol Nuur, stretching for 136 kilometers and holding 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water, is a sacred lake and part of the Baikal Rift System. Often described as pristine by tourism companies, it has still been impacted by increased domestic and international tourism. Fragments and films of consumer plastics, including plastic bottles, fishing gear, and plastic bags, are now being found in the lake.

As a company that offers tour experiences, we understand the importance of highlighting Mongolia’s beauty. But Mongolia is also our home. The heart-wrenching reality of plastic pollution in Lake Khovsgol is one reason we published our Tourism Manifesto for Mongolia. As the country gears up to potentially welcome a million visitors, balancing tourism promotion with the preservation of its natural and cultural heritage is crucial.

Our Manifesto focuses on five key points, including Domestic and International Awareness Campaigns. We advocate for using influencers and targeted campaigns to educate visitors on minimizing their environmental footprint while traveling in Mongolia. Promoting responsible behaviors, like reducing single-use plastics—especially important in a country with limited recycling facilities—can significantly mitigate adverse effects.

We’re dedicating this Plastic Free July, a campaign by the Plastic Free Foundation, to highlight this critical issue. As a small independent company, we can’t instigate all the necessary changes ourselves, but we aim to contribute to the conversation and hope to help drive collective action.

Today, our guests are experiencing the thrill of Naadam horse racing. 🐎🇲🇳 As one of the "Three Manly Sports" of Naadam, alongside archery and wrestling, horse racing is a central part of the festival.

There's a popular saying: "Mongols are born in the saddle," and horses have been integral to the traditional nomadic way of life. No celebration is complete without a horse race.

Rural children learn to ride at the age of four or five, sometimes even younger. From a Western perspective, the use of child jockeys and the lengthy race distances (approx. 12km-27km) can be surprising. However, these traditions are deeply rooted in Mongolian culture and history. Thankfully, safety standards have improved over the years. While it can be upsetting to see a riderless horse or a young dismounted jockey, organizations are now focusing on balancing cultural heritage with safety.

Horses compete in age groups, showcasing their speed, stamina, and strength. Tradition dictates that the race routes be long and straight, truly testing the character and endurance of these magnificent animals.

The Mongol Deeltei Festival has kicked off the national Naadam celebrations in Ulaanbaatar with great energy. This fantastic event celebrates the Mongolian deel, Mongolia's traditional costume, bringing together people of all ages for a fashion show like no other, featuring music and a concert.

What truly stands out is seeing members of Mongolia's Independent Living Centre, Түгээмэл Хөгжил "Universal Progress" (MILC), front and center at the event.

The Deeltei Naadam remains one of our favourite events at Naadam. While it might be described as a fashion parade, that doesn’t do it justice. The festival showcases a stunning array of deels, from traditional ethnic group representations to modern designs. Not only do models parade, but local residents and many spectators also join in, celebrating Mongolia's rich cultural heritage and unique identity.

The immense pride and individuality with which the Mongolian deel is worn makes this event a true celebration of who modern Mongolians are.

I love this photo of our guests helping out at the home of the Gabadrakh yak herding family. It shows how comfortable they are with their extended homestay experience. After all, why do people travel? One reason is to experience a way of life and culture different from our own.

Our Mongolia homestay experiences allow you to slow down, connect with people from a different culture, share daily experiences with them, and soak up life from another perspective as you eat, sleep, and travel the local way.

We recently arranged an extended stay for this couple from North Yorkshire. Growing up with sheep farming and still working on farms during lambing season, they were eager to immerse themselves in this unique cultural experience.

As always, we kept the plan flexible to ensure a respectful Mongolian experience with genuine connections. Our experiences are crafted to benefit the host families, working in long-term partnerships with local communities to enhance their lives rather than disrupt them. But remember, life here operates on nomad time, meaning there's no fixed schedule. Each day's plans are influenced by the host family, the weather, and the daily tasks at hand.

Back in 2010/11, starting Eternal Landscapes was filled with hurdles—securing accommodation contracts and finding reliable guides seemed almost Herculean tasks.

In facing these challenges, Turuu and I decided that innovation was our only path forward. We built long-term partnerships with local communities and, as we were searching for guides, noticed a pattern within the industry: a circuit of seasoned guides rotating between companies and a preference for Western leaders over locals. This sparked a critical question—how could passionate locals, particularly women, enter tourism if they lacked formal qualifications, experience, or contacts?

That's when we made a pivotal decision: to break industry norms by hiring only Mongolian women as tour guides. This wasn't just about filling a gap—it was about creating opportunities where few existed.

We chose to be the catalyst for change. By providing opportunities to these women guides, we helped them not only enter the industry but excel in it. This decision has since become a cornerstone of our operations, shaping the unique experiences we offer to our guests, whom we invite to be part of this bigger travel philosophy.

What I love most is seeing our team not just as colleagues but as friends who enjoy spending time together, even outside of work. We continue to strive to make Eternal Landscapes a platform where our guides can nurture their ambitions, embark on adventures, and unlock their full potential.

I've been an avid listener of the Soul Of Travel podcast for several seasons now. Celebrating Citizen Conservationists for #worldwildlifeday

Since the inception of the Association Goviin Khulan @goviinkhulan project, fostering strong ties with the local community and protected areas' rangers has been integral to their mission.

They've empowered select individuals as 'citizen conservationists,' equipping them with the skills to gather crucial data on Gobi wildlife. Their enthusiastic involvement in using camera traps has yielded invaluable insights, pinpointing key locations for future monitoring efforts. Through this method, they've amassed a wealth of data on wildlife and livestock water source utilisation.

Building on this success, they're now poised to expand their initiatives, providing additional training and equipment to both existing and new community members. These citizen conservationists will not only aid in gathering data on Mongolian khulan and other Gobi wildlife but will also play a pivotal role in our conservation tourism program.

Beyond data collection, these community members will serve as champions for local awareness, advocating for the protection of Gobi wildlife and the delicate ecosystem it inhabits.

Association Goviin Khulan is dedicated to safeguarding the Mongolian wild ass, also known as the khulan, serving as a keystone species within the Gobi Desert ecosystem. Their mission is to fortify protection efforts through collaborative partnerships with protected areas' administrations and local communities.

Focus On The #mongoliankhulan for #worldwildlifeday

The Mongolian Wild Ass, also known as the Khulan, holds a special place as the focus species of @goviinkhulan. It once roamed across vast expanses of Russia, #Mongolia, northern China, northwest India, and the Middle East. However, historical records indicate a staggering decline, with the species losing up to 70% of its range since the 19th century. Factors such as competition with livestock for resources, over-hunting, and habitat degradation have led to its regional extinction in many former range countries.

Today, Mongolia serves as a critical refuge for the species, hosting approximately 75% of the global population. The heart of their habitat lies in Mongolia's #gobidesert, with the largest concentration found in the southeast region.

In Mongolia, numerous threats loom over the survival of the Mongolian khulan. These include the impacts of climate change, competition with livestock for resources, habitat fragmentation from infrastructure development, habitat loss and degradation, and the persistent threats of illegal hunting and trade.

Remarkably, the Mongolian khulan serves as an ecological engineer within the Gobi Desert, digging wells to access water during dry seasons, and facilitating access to water for other species.
