Trip Details – Felting Workshop – Mongolia one day tour

Asral NGO felting

Our felt workshops are held in partnership with the Mongolian Buddhist NGO Asral.

Held at their multi-purpose community centre in Ulaanbaatar’s largest ger district, these workshops are informal and relaxed and designed to give you an insight into the vital work taking place by Asral as well as a chance to practice this traditional art form with the women supported by Asral as part of their Made In Mongolia felt making project. As well as making your own item to take away with you, you’ll also learn about the different processes needed to construct felt as well as the history and practical values of Mongolian felt making.

Why Felting?

Felt is considered to be one of the oldest known textiles and is produced by matting, condensing, and pressing fibers together. Asral makes all of its felt products by using this same process and you will learn these same techniques. Mongolians have been producing and using felt products made from the wool of their livestock (sheep) for generations. As an example, one of the most important parts of a Mongolian ger is the insulating felt layers that cover the roof and the walls.

Asral is the Mongolian word for ‘care’ and Asral NGO (https://www.asralmongolia.org/) was founded by High Tibetan Lama, Ven. Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche. In 1994 Rinpoche was invited by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to assist with the plight of Mongolian people after the collapse of the Soviet Union and thus Asral NGO was created. Since its foundation, Asral has helped with the ever-present levels of poverty and social problems in Mongolia – specifically in the Bayangol ger district – one of the largest ger districts in Ulaanbaatar.

The core aim of Asral is to help keep Mongolian families under stress together thereby helping to prevent children from ending up on the street – whether that be they are running away from their home life or they have no home. Asral’s multi-purpose centre (the Kunchab Jampaling Buddhist Centre) located in the Bayangol ger district of Ulaanbaatar, houses many of Asral’s social initiatives, training projects and community activities. We have been supporting the work of Asral for many years including their Made In Mongolia felting project.
